Travelling Hacks

I always bring extension cord whenever I go on travels. Saka universal adapter.

Universal adapters are lifesavers. I recently discovered this extension cord with plugs and USB, and I bring it all the time.

Since I really don’t like bringing home dirty underwear, I get disposable underwear. Maganda yung sa Watsons na cotton + polyester.

Nagnenenok din ako ng mga laundry bags ng hotels and use them as lalagyan ng dirty clothes.

On plane seat selection:

  • Select upper deck seat (yung aakyat ng hagdan) kung may ganitong option for economy class. Mas mabilis ang meal service dahil mas maliit ang cabin. At nasa tabi ng upuan yung compartment.
  • For PAL A320 plane na 3-3 seat configuration, may nag-iisang row na 2-2 configuration (row 54, or near that row). Kung mag isa ka lang at ayaw ng katabi, at di naman importante na window seat, there’s less probability na may pumili nito at tumabi sayo pag nauna ka na.

Same with most of what has been mentioned. Here are my travel essentials.

  1. RFID blocking neck pouch - Light, waterproof, slash-resistant. You can wear under the shirt. I use Pacsafe. For passport, cards, pen, destination currency or US$, itinerary.

  2. Travel light. Hindi ako ma-ootd eh. Always bring a set of clothes on hand luggage for international travel. Otherwise, I just do my laundry at the hotel or buy at the destination especially for longer trips requiring frequent transportation like in Europe. Hassle kapag madaming luggage when country-hopping.

  3. Do your research and download travel apps. Maps, car booking apps, restaurant locators, language apps, itinerary organizer, currency converter, etc. There is really an app for everything, and it has been very helpful during my solo travel.

  4. Bring your own water bottle.

  5. For toiletries, wrap with plastic underneath the caps to avoid spillages.

  6. Bring a multiport USB charging station and international power adapters for gadgets, so most if not all can get charged in one area. Also helps kung konti ang power plugs sa hotel. Shempre, need powerbanks din.

  7. I always request for emergency exit row plane seats for more leg room without extra charge. Speaking of exits, the area near the exit door is usually colder.

  8. Roll clothes when packing. Saves space. I stick to neutral colors, lighter fabrics para mas madaling mag mix and match and lighter on the luggage. But that’s just me (na hindi ma-ootd).

  9. Make sure to advise your banks and telco (for roaming) that you are travelling overseas to avoid service disruption. Sometimes credit card companies automatically block cards with suspicious foreign transactions and it would be very inconvenient if this happens. These days I just use international roaming, but I used to either rent portable wifi or buy a local sim before. But telcos now have worry-free, anti bill shock roaming promo rates which I find more convenient and saves me time rather than queue at the airport kiosks.

‘Yan muna. Most importantly, have fun and bring loads of patience.

  1. When choosing hotel rooms, make sure you are provided with electric kettle. Apart from the courtesy bottled water provided in your room, you can boil your own water for your “baon” during your tour. Water is expensive especially in Europe.

  2. Whenever I can, I bring small packs of “baon” when I travel like skyflakes, tuna in foil (para di mabigat), etc. Nakakatipid ako sa meryenda and sometimes sa full meal.

  3. Always compare prices of hotel rooms and airfare in different websites.

  4. Always check the limit of baggage allowance and your baggage weight (both handcarry and check-in). May mga madudugas na airline sa hidden charges (especially budget airlines).

  5. When I fly long-haul flights, I ask the ground crew if I am seated near children. I do not want to disturbed by crying kids so I ask to be seated far from them. I also ask for window/aisle seat preferably at the back but not the seat nearest to the lavatory. Most of time, I have the entire row for myself.

This. I always bring 1-2 instant noodles (la paz bachoy/creamy seafood) when I travel esp. to Europe. Minsan kasi biglang nakakamiss lang ang lasang Pinoy (as if naman napakatagal nagtatravel; the longest I’ve been away ay 1mo lang :embarasslaff:)

and pala, DO NOT FORGET frequent flyer programs! Sayang ang miles. :grinning:

:tama:

wala naman malaking mawawala if you sign up and diligently ensure that the miles you’re due are duly credited.

in my past life as a frequent flyer, dami ko na din na-claim from mileage rewards.

not all frequent flyer programs are created equal though. the mileage for some are valid forever. with others, may expiration (usually pwede i-extend at least one using a small portion of miles din).

Anong recommended frequent flyer program nyo?

Some airlines can waive like a kilo or two. Pero kapag punuan ang flight (such as holidays), they really weigh everything, including all your handcarried baggages. Thus, I generally leave a kilo free, just in case.

i can’t personally recommend one in particular. i just made it a point to register on airlines that my (then) company sent me on.

so for a time had a lot of accrued miles on Singapore Airlines, Swiss Air and Qantas.

got the most upgrades from Singapore and Swiss Air.
sulit yung sa Swiss Air kasi Zurich-HK-Manila yun.
for Singapore, Sin-Perth na yung longest at 5hrs.

over the years, got a few watches and perfumes from Qantas and Krisflyer rewards.

ipon lang ng miles kapag pede. then it’d usually start to matter kapag nag-Gold tier ka na.

^I have Asia Miles (Cathay) and KrisFlyer (SAL). I personally like these two airlines when i travel to Eu because of the reasonable fare, service, food, and schedule. No hassle din kahit mahaba lay over kasi maganda ang airport . Cathay is also a member of One World Alliance so you can earn points if you fly other airlines. Madami din partner hotels, shops. May expiry nga lang ang points, pero ok naman. I was able to redeem na din na di masyado hassle. So pag may chance, I usually fly via these airlines para na din sa points

Mabuhay miles (PAL) also OK.

@nescafe_ice13 I’m a loyal Cathay Pacific frequent flyer. From Asia Miles nasa Marco Polo program na after almost a decade.

As much as they have the bad rep, na enjoy ko yung United Airlines na frequent flyer program. We have a corporate account kasi. Yung owner ng company namin, his sister is a retired FA with United so we use them. They even invite us to their corporate events like new service launches to test it out.

You have to consider din the routes and your frequent travel destinations before deciding on frequent flyer programs. For example, I don’t really use Mabuhay Miles kasi I barely travel PAL routes. However, you can always have a travel agent or note in bookings if you can get your miles if you book with the same program like One World or Star Alliance. Natawa namin yan noon with ANA and Lufthansa na nacredit sa United Airlines miles namin when we traveled with those said airlines kasi they were in the same airline group.

May be useful for frequent travelers, I hoard 'yung departure card for immig, tapos i fill it out early on before coming to the airport, para time-saving esp mahaba lagi pila sa immig

Invest in a portable weighing scale

Agree with the weighing scale.
A lot of ziplocks
Alcohol wipes na individually wrapped like Purell
Extra slippers (para sa hotel) -ayoko naka yapak lang
Water bottle
Extra card holder - separate from wallet para you can put your id and card lang dun for quick lakad from hotel
Free breakfast in hotels and free parking

^^ agree sa lahat ng hacks above.

Kami for work travels, meron kaming what we call “constant companion” which has all the emergency numbers of the country program you are visiting, pati for health emergencies and med evac. The card also has your emergency contacts and key health info, like your blood type, known allergies, etc.

Naalala ko nung nag b byahe pa ako, may mga notes ako kung ano masarap na luto sa Cathay  Naka post-it sya sa passport ko :hihi:

You should have a dedicated travel backpack, i.e. don’t use your daily/work backpack for travels.

You’re bound to forget stuff when you have to transfer items. The only thing you should be transferring to your dedicated travel backpack is your work laptop and maybe your work ID (if you’re traveling for work).

P.S. If you’re a guy travelling for a long weekend and your stuff do not fit in a 30-32L backpack, shame on you.

Holy Trinity of Travel…
Passport, tickets,insurance, credit card

Porn sa cellphone? Ooops… “holy” pala

Recently, mas PAL ang ginagamit namin for work. Good thing I signed up for Mabuhay Miles before I left KL, and yeah, buti may PAL na ulit sa Malaysia. Before that, I joined Malaysia Airlines’ Enrich program, and they have links with the Oneworld alliance.

Ont: when I travel for work, especially if I am part of a delegation, I really tell the airline counter na kasama po ako ni (name of boss), kailangan po lumabas agad yung bagahe ko kasi maiiwan kami sa movement. They tag your luggage as priority, and isa sya sa mga first lumabas sa baggage claim. Works for me–minsan nauuna pang lumabas yung luggage ko sa luggage ng boss :biglaugh:

One hack I have learned on the job, when we were helping out delegations overseas, is apart from the delegation using identifying tags, we ask them to take photos of their luggage and luggage tags. Saves you time when collecting luggages of delegations.
