Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt. Depressing due to its large doses of misery porn, but balanced by the humorous storytelling. The descriptive writing also transported me to Ireland, kaya gusto kong mag-travel doon and do a pub crawl.

Pwede bang more than one? There’s so many but here’s a few that resonated with me over the years.

The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho - I was 20 years old and at a loss if I wanted to go back home and finish my degree or stick it out and pursue a military career.

Man’s Search for Meaning by Victor E. Fankl - same as above

Personal Finance: The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins

The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do, and How to Change by Charles Duhigg - great book to inspire and motivate yourself and others when going through organizational change. Also picked it up again when I changed specialties and worked with patients with morbid obesity.

Atlas Shrugged too. I’ve read it twice, once when I was in HS and again when I was in my late 20s. Magkaiba ung dating and feeling, so I’ve been meaning to read it again now

Also Celestine Prophecy.

Haruki Murakami- Wind-up Bird Chronicle

I read the book around 3rd year HS. Before that, I would stick to classics and crime novels. Nagulat ako sa writing style ni Murakami lalo na sa libro na ito. Dalang dala ka sa setting ng mga kwento niya that to this day I still associate the process of cooking spaghetti with jazz music, as described sa book.

Also, “The Four-Chambered Heart” by Anaïs Nin. Love her as a diarist primarily. That novel opened my eyes to the beguiling, heart-expanding world of polyamory.
