Lactose intolerance coping strategies

Sino mga lactose intolerant diyan? :wave2: Any coping strategies? Tips?

I think most Filipinos are, we just don’t consume enough milk products to feel the symptoms. :joy:

I used to only have trouble whenever I drink Chuckie milk chocolate. Ngayon, kahit hot chocolate ng Starbucks, hindi na kaya without having an upset stomach after. I once had to take a shit on a flight because of this, I hate :poop: on planes :sob: Have taken to asking baristas to use soy milk instead, only to learn na not all soy milk are lactose free. May gatas parin pala ang iba :man_facepalming:

Lactose intolerant ako pero kasama sa mga paborito ko ang cheese and milk :hahaha: pero usually I consume dairy products kapag nasa bahay lang ako, para ready to go agad in case abutan na. Kapag nasa labas naman at hindi talaga mapigilan na kumain ng masasarap na may gatas (for example, with Starbucks and Black Scoop ang end up sa akin ay ang not-good-butterflies hehe), usually bibili na lang ako kapag pauwi na ako, or… nagreready na lang ako sa posibleng giyera na mangyayari sa tiyan ko.

I very rarely have ice cream outside the house. Dahil hassle. The only times i do is when i need to make tests in the lab. Pero super tikim lang yun.
Once I had a serious craving for grilled cheese. I had it for bfast and lunch. Days prior to that, i was starting to use milk in my coffee. Nawala sa isip ko. Ayun, come dinner time, hindi ko na alam ang pakiramdam ko. I was throwing up tapos masakit ang sikmura at hindi ko alam kung babaluktot o uunat. Cold sweats. I tried antacid, walang effect. Akala ko it was the end of me.

In a way, this quarantine is good for us no? Always safe at home. Huhu. So far, I’ve been eating ice cream every day for about two weeks now (just half a cup, helps me keep my sanity :joy: ). Medyo sumasakit lang tiyan ko but nothing too serious. Or baka mababa lang milk content ng flavor na ito (banana graham from Selecta’s summer collection).

@mela I can never give up milk tea. :yum: Tiis tiis na lang. :sob:

I’ve heard of lactase tablets but I haven’t really seriously looked for them. Have any of you tried those?

I think I associate it sa amount of consumed product over a period of time. If I eat my cream based pasta over 2 hours I am good, but if I gulp a lot in a few minutes, expect the expected.

I ask Mam Barista in SB to replace regular milk with soy milk in my drinks.

Dati walang negative reaction with cheese, ngayon kapag napadami sa pasta, Id come running

First (and last) time naman yun.

Hehe. Plant milk, daming options na basta may blender ka, pwede mong gawin sa bahay: oat milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, almond milk, etc.

Cheeses made from plants. Nakakaaliw!!!

Oh, kala ko ganyan regular struggle mo. Buti naman

Oh there is that too.

So I just don’t go there anymore unless I can afford to take the hit. haha

Whoa. That sucks :frowning:

@wkt Oh, for a moment akala ko nagsuggest ka na bumili ng almond milk etc. Ang mahal kasi ng mga yun. Will try the DIY route. Thanks for the tip!

Careful ako magconsume ng anything with milk kapag out of home… pero usual trap is milktea, que horror

At home, I drink lactose-free milk (Harvey Fresh or Cowhead lang brands ko sa far), dati I used to drink almond milk din

I realize I’m fine with cheese and I have to be coz I love cheese, huwag lang sobra sobra

I’m not lactose intolerant but I’m vegan so if anyone needs any help with dairy substitutes, even cheeses, just ask! Tip: sa liquid milk, try this brand Vitasoy Milky. It tastes very much like dairy.

Oh nice. Thanks! Will definitely take you up on that offer

Yung favorite naman namin ay Lactasoy. They have lots of flavors (black sesame, matcha, etc) and what I like about them is they clearly label kung Vegetarian siya or hindi. May ibang flavors kasi na may milk powder :poop:

Try vitasoy milky! The best one in the sub-P100 range. Very neutral tasting pwede rin sya for cooking, like sopas!

Plus it can make foam for your latte. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-quraYnVnK/?igshid=1rttmwum0whyn

I like Lactasoy too!

I have a friend na may baong Lactaid ba yun everywhere she goes. Effective naman daw.

Am semi-lactose intolerant, pero kinakaya naman. Wag lang yung tipong milk tea, ice cream and dairy products in one day. Levels ang sakit ng tiyan ko after that.

Awesome! Would you know kung san siya bumili? Haha

Amazon, perhaps?

Oh crud. Was hoping na dito siya  Shipping fees a pain. Time to check local shopping sites again :computer:

Wasn’t lactose intolerant as a kid. I started having bad reactions to dairy when I hit 20s. :embarasslaff: Ngayon, basta naka-1 baso ako ng gatas, kaboom.

I’ve tried switching to plant-based “milk”. Vitasoy nga ang pinaka-close. Kaso for beverage 'yun.

That said, I’ve never tried asking coffee shops here to switch milk for soy or almond milk. Ginagawa ba nila?

If you need cheese, meron tayong local manufacturers, check out In A Nutshell and The Real Happy Cow. I also tried making “Cheez Whiz” recently. It was easier than I thought! The link to the recipe is here.

They do. If I recall correctly, may additional charge (around 20 pesos) but some soy milk brands contain milk powder din. So unless you check kung ano talaga gamit nila, you might still be screwed :joy:
